3 Steps to Take Before You Ask for a Raise

Hello,
Saw this from one of sites i follow and decided to share it. If you have seen this before than you are on the right part. Or Should i basically say if you follow Harvard Business review, you are on the part to success.

Have a good time learning.

-->
Too many people operate under the assumption that if they do a good job, a good salary will follow. Getting the pay you want requires asking for it. But before you ask, be sure you are prepared.

1. Understand the broader situation. It is always easier to get a raise when the company is doing well. If your company is not in a good position, consider postponing the conversation.
2. Rate your market value honestly. How does your salary compare with people in similar roles both inside and outside the company? Does your job require you to use your most valuable skills and experience? Know your true worth so you can articulate it.
3. Highlight your contributions. You are more likely to get a raise if your boss can make the case to others in the company. Find opportunities to demonstrate your value beyond your boss and your team.

AN ALTERNATIVE LOOK AT INTERVIEW TECHNIQUE

INTERVIEW BEHAVIOR
THE INTERVIEW

There are possibly three main areas to consider:-

*Body Language
*Thinking on your feet
*What to say

BODY LANGUAGE

An experienced interviewer will be looking at how you compose yourself during the interview and these are some of the points you need to consider.

POSTURE - Sit up-right, look keen and interested but not too wooden. If you lean back this maybe seen as a casual attitude and, therefore that you are not very interested in the job. It is however, important to look and feel relaxed.

HANDS - Keep control of hands as they have a tendency to let people down at interview by almost having a mind of their own. It sometimes works to clasp hands lightly together but be careful when folding arms as this can be seen as someone being defensive and evasive. An open stance normally suggests that a more open and honest discussion will take place. It is advised that you should not keep touching your face as this is a sign of nerves just as playing with hair or fiddling with something like a pen or button etc. May also be construed as nervousness and a potential weakness. If the interviewer shakes your hand, do not shy away always shake hands firmly and maintain eye contact.

FACE - Always maintain eye contact with the interviewer as this not only shows that you are interested in what is being said but also looked upon by some people as a strength of character, however do not stare. It is important to smile and look as if you are enjoying the interview even if you are extremely nervous! If the interviewer enjoys talking to you they are more likely to want to meet you again.

TIME TO THINK

The company should already have received a copy of your CV, plus a brief Personal Profile that we put together on you. The client will be looking to see how you compose yourself how well presented you are. Other than that the interviewer will have specific questions that they will ask to gather more information or to test your aptitude and/or opinion in certain areas or on specific issues. They will be trying to envisage you doing the job, fitting into their culture and adopting their working practices successfully. They will check your experience (if relevant), expertise, specific skills, attitude and how you are likely to interact with the other members of the team. Be sure that you are prepared, which will reduce the time you have to think on your feet. Prepare before hand answers to the questions below. (you will be asked some if not all of these questions in some way shape or form)

What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Be honest! Relate your answers to a working environment. Don’t say that you can’t wallpaper but you are good at painting walls! This is not relevant to the interviewer so they do not want to hear it!!

Why do you wish to leave your current employer?
Do not bad mouth your current employer even if you are devastatingly unhappy

Why do you want this job?
Be positive, tell them it provides a challenge or pick on one point that really interests you and be specific. If you’re vague you won’t be convincing.

What motivates and de-motivates you?
Again be honest but relate it to work issues. Draw on previous experience and don’t be afraid to use examples.

What do you enjoy most about your current job?
Try to relate this to work issues and bring in (if you can) similarities between the job you are being interviewed for.

What has been your greatest achievement?
What has been the biggest mistake you’ve made?
What did you learn from this?
This isn’t designed to catch you out, the interviewer is looking to see how you overcome a crisis, there is no wrong or right way to answer this. If you haven’t made a mistake then tell them, but make sure you are being honest because everyone knows that we all make mistakes.

What skills can you bring into this company?
Focus only on skills that are relevant.

What do you expect to achieve in the next 5 years?
Be ambitious but realistic.

This list is not exhaustive and therefore it may be wise to sit down beforehand and think about questions that you may be asked or have been asked at previous interviews.

WHAT TO SAY
It is likely that you will be talking for two thirds of the interview. It is important, therefore that you are precise and offer detailed and exact answers to questions without waffling. Before answering think “Why have they asked that question and what information are they looking for?” You need to be natural when in conversation and be positive with your replies. There is nothing worse than someone who doesn’t answer the question and gives vague replies. ‘Sitting on the fence’ will do you no favours and may demonstrate their indecisiveness of lack of conviction. It is important to be assertive without being confrontational. Also don’t ramble keep answer brief and relevant don’t go off at a tangent!

SUMMARY

Always be yourself in an interview situation as a good interviewer will see through a performance. All the preparation in the world will not guarantee you a job but it will give you the advantage over the candidate who hasn’t done any preparation at all.

We are here to help if you have any questions - do not hesitate to call us. We can offer full advice on anything regarding your interview, from what to wear to what to say!

INTERVIEW TIPS

Here is some information which may help you to successfully get over the hurdles of attending an interview. Some of them you may find blatantly obvious, but sometimes we can forget the most obvious things!

APPEARANCE

Your appearance speaks volumes even before you’ve said a word. So:-

. Be smart & well groomed. Always wear a shirt, tie & jacket or a smart suit

. Wear something you feel comfortable in.

. Keep all jewellery and make up minimal, don’t over do it. Natural is best!!

PREPARATION

Find out the basic information about the company - employers are impressed by those who show initiative.

. What is the companies product or service?
. Number of staff employed?
. Is the company part of a larger group?

Find out about the job - learn all you can about the job in question and decide why you are right for it.

. Read the job spec
. Make Notes of your relevant experience
. Note down valid points that you feel are relevant to the job in question

PUNCTUALITY

Even if you are kept waiting, you cannot afford to be late!!

STRUCTURE OF THE INTERVIEW

Interviews generally follow a set pattern. The interviewer will:-
. Tell you about the company and the job.
. Ask you questions to assess your abilities, personality & motivation
. Ask if you have any questions
. Inform you of the next stage of the process & when a final decision will be made

AT THE INTERVIEW

The questions you ask at the interview are equally as important as those that you are asked. The interview is a time for you to find out if you want the job as well. By asking the right questions you can ascertain exactly what the job will entail. Here are some pointers when asking the interviewer for more information.
. Be confident, positive and look directly at the interviewer when you
talk & listen
. Speak clearly, be enthusiastic & express a keen interest in the
position
. Try to keep your hand’s still
. Question anything that you do not understand
. Keep to the point don’t ramble!!

SOME POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

1. Can you tell me more about the company?
2. Can you describe my area of responsibility
3. Is this post a new or existing one?
4. Who will I report to?
5. Can you show me where I will be working? (Better on a second interview)
6. Are there any times when the company/department is busier
7. What are my promotion prospects?
8. Do you run any training schemes?
9. What hours will I be working
10. Do you have any other branches/offices?
11. What type of clients do you deal with?
12. Will you be holding second interviews?

Obviously do not ask all these questions just select a few which are relevant and you feel comfortable asking.

SOME QUESTIONS THAT MAY REQUIRE ANSWERING

1. What do you know about us?
2. Describe your present duties & responsibilities?
3. Why do you want this particular job?
4. How would you describe yourself?
5. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
6. In a job what is important to you?

I hope that at this stage you feel slightly more confident about attending an interview. Please call me immediately after your interview to let me know how it went. I would appreciate your honesty at this stage. Good Luck!!

The Grass Is Getting Greener!!!!

Wow!!!
Being a long time since my big head has logged in to share some tips an ideas with the little i know about careers, interviews and best ways to sell ourselves via our CV/Resume.

Now I have come to repent and I would share as much as i get to learn on this blog.

May I say at this point that its time to get your CVs revamp if you are in search of a job because the economy has and is still improving, hence recruiters are looking for the very skilled ones. Hence don't get intimidated by the "We are sorry" response in emails and no feedback from recruiters or companies. I tell you solemnly its time to start the search again.

A good book, the Bible makes me to understand that its good to sow every-time as you do not know which would bring your harvest. It also says you should cast your breads on many waters for the reward would come in its season.

In summary, for those looking for greater and better opportunities do not hesitate to intensify the search. And by intensify i mean applying for not less then 25jobs in a day. If you need to know how to search contact me by email on segun_kosoko@yahoo.com as searching differ with skills and discipline.

Did i hear you say, what if I am not looking for a job cause am happy with the one i have now? My advice to you is that you be more effective at what you doing to the extent you are recommended by your boss. For this season is also the season of appraisals and pay rise.

Note; Kindly do this for the right reasons. Whatever the reasons is to you. e.g promotion, career justification, pay rise ;) [wink] etc.

In my next post letter today i would share with you some Interview piece i stole from a brother of mine who interview is in some days.

Do take care.

Cheers.

Achievements !!

Its right about the time of the year when we need to start taking stocks of how far we have gone.

I tell you this is not the time to start calling regrets nor pointing fingers. Am sure at the beginning of the year we all set out some goals to achieve with regards our career. I remember we discussed about doing some professional exam or probably learning something new at your place of work or probably changing career path.

If you did write them down and did not do anything with it then you only had a dream and not a vision; For vision without an action is just a mere dream. Its good to dream, but if you are still in dream land, its high time you woke up.

I want to believe we all wrote down these career goals and visions? To those that did lets open them up and start scoring ourselves and striking out those accomplished. Note; there is not class captain or teacher who is watching you. You are your class captain and teacher. Most importantly there is no 1st position. So make sure you do due diligence and don't forget to give yourself a treat were you merit it.

At the same time lets start getting set for the challenges we plan to tackle in 2010. I will like us to know that our careers/jobs are as important as our lives, as that is our Jerusalem; where we are called to be an example. Being a good example on your job or your chosen career will not only encourage younger generation to come but also speak about what you believe-in and who you are.

You success in your career or job gives insight to so many and make so many draw closer to you cause they want to know what you are doing right. This is the impact required of us in this world.

Talk to you some other time.

Going spiritual with Career.

In recent times I have being very quite not doing any write ups as usual on something that is dear to my heart, which is careers.

Most times these have little to do with me instead, it has more to do with other people which I want to see grow in the area of their career.

In recent times I have being seeing things in a different light as regards life generally. Am a strong believer in the power or positive thinking and power of positive confession but nonetheless I want to draw our attention to something, which is more powerful.

Today's topic I titled "Going spiritual with career" is a function of achieving our physical needs having satisfied our spiritual obligation, yes obligation... just one.

Which is what Mathew chapter 6 verse 33 of the Holy Bible has said; I quote the new living version; "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Reading from verse 25 of the same chapter it said in its earlier part that "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?....." These material things can be substituted for our dream jobs or our career.

The cross of the matter is that we leave in an in-perfect world with in-perfect people, the only person that can see us through this is only if we put our trust in God by seeking him first and his righteousness, then other things which include our careers our dream jobs shall be added to us.

This has not said stop applying for those jobs and stop sending those CVs, its just a wake up call for us to keep our eyes focus on the one that create, provides and retain jobs.

Feel free to listen to Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo's positive confessions on careers in the link below;

Cheers.

Job Search In Recession

Hello,
What a wonderful month January was, init?
Looking back to 1st of January, i hope some of us can successfully tick right some achievements as laid down at the beginning of the year. If not, don't get discouraged, you can start that thing you decided to do.... So go for it!

I hear a lot in the news about companies closing down in the tens and jobs being lost in the thousands; so pathetic. Someone said and i quote "Recession is when your neighbour looses his/her job and Depression is when you loose your job".... this is more pathetic.

I really feel for those who lost their jobs due to the recession but i have come here to tell you that today that yours is here to stay and most importantly that for those who are still searching your job is outside there. I often tell ask job seekers whose report do you believe? I know quite a number of people who have gained employment in the so called "recession". Don't get me wrong, i know the world economy is in recession at the moment and will not use my blog to point out fingers on what is or might be the cause.

So as i was saying, gaining employment in this time is 100% possible, only if you will not relent and if you would believe and have faith. (Faith; the substance of things you are yet to receive).

I put it to you today that your career path, does not start and stop in how many qualifications you have and how many professional certification you have in your credit. Yes, i know your experience as well count, ... yes at that; even its the most. But, there is something that counts more, your FAITH.

As so many change careers or search for jobs, fresh graduates, experienced hands etc, i advise you do not forget the place of FAITH. Because, it brings to reality that job which you are about to start.

I congratulate all that as decided to take this step as sure without any doubt in my heart that your desired career and job is out there waiting for you.

I admonish you further not to stop and a hourly, daily basis search for that job, for he who seeks shall find.
